Pro-poor child birth services in Indonesia

A recent study conducted by IMMPACT demonstrated that deployment of large number of village midwives (Bidan di desa) during 1991-97 in Indonesia resulted in major increase in the attendance of deliveries by medically trained professionals. The most remarkable finding is that the women of the lowest 40 percent of economic status received much of the benefits from this intervention. However, life saving intervention, like Caesarean Section still remains very low among the poor people. (Laurel et al. 2006)

Dear Dr Zahid,

this is a very good idea to get perceptions, comments, ideas and idealism, angst and sentiments of people (hehehe, counting myself as one). i suggest post more pictures depicting 'pro-poor' concept like those pictures of UNFPA staff in the Phils (hehehe). Stay healthy!

Dear Dr. Zahid,

This is great.Yeah what an irony indeed that in beautful places like Sagada women die as they give birth to a new life. On the bright side, this is not hopeless as technologies and strategies already exist to prevent maternal deaths such as skilled birth attendance . I wish that we can increase skilled midwives birthing services in our remote areas in the Philippines. Cheers!
